Geriatric Rehabilitation and Fall Prevention Program

(Available at the St. Albert location only)

At CSA Physiotherapy, Grandin Plaza, we offer a unique program to the aging population. The incidence of falls increases as we age and these falls can have serious implications on a person’s health, mobility and independence. In fact, many studies report that up to 1 in 3 people over the age of 60 have falls and often they fall more than once. One of the factors that can predispose an aging person to falls is poor balance, altered gait patterns and previous joint replacements. This is where Physical Therapy can play an important role in preventing injury and help the aging population in maintaining their independence.

Physical Therapy and Balance Retraining

The program at CSA Physiotherapy is designed to help prevent falls and ensure that the likelihood of injury due to a fall is minimized. The physiotherapist first determines the specific needs of each individual patient who is having problems with balance and/or reduced mobility. Once the needs of the patient have been determined, a specific program is designed to retrain balance and improve mobility, general conditioning and function. As series of movements, exercise or activities as well as education are all part of the rehabilitation program. Often treatment and instruction will be provided in small groups if there are patients with similar needs and abilities. The physiotherapist is always present and works one on one with each patient even in the group setting to ensure they are safe and progressing.

How to access the Balance and Fall Prevention program

The Balance and Fall Prevention program is run by a dedicated physiotherapist in the clinic. A referral is not required, however if there are any concerns that the balance problem, poor conditioning or reduced mobility is related to a more serious medical condition, this should first be cleared with a medical doctor. If the physiotherapist has any concerns during the initial assessment and consultation, she will inform the patient and ensure the patient is referred back to their doctor. For information on funding options please see the FAQ page of this website or call the clinic directly.
